South Houston new library dedication on January 7, 1968

South Houston dedicated, their new library building on January 7» 1968. It has been named the George Washington Christy Library. It is a result of Mayor Christy's attendance at the Governor's Conference on Libraries in Austin in 1966. The City purchased the building from the Telephone Company for $1.00, then moved it to its present location on Dallas St. and remodeled it. Half of the building is for library use and half is a meeting room. The library has new shelving, tables, chairs, desk, etc. provided' by Mayor Christy. South Houston Branch had been located in the Community Building on State St. since 1959*
