1989
by Commissioner Lee following a
community drive headed by San Jacinto
College South president Parker Williams,
who spent 27 years as a librarian in public,
school and community college libraries.
Williams also holds a Ph.D. from East
Texas State University in library science.
Williams, through her involvement with
the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Com¬
merce, pushed for the creation of a South
Belt public library, and Lee found room for
it in a building already occupied by the
county’s Justice of the Peace and Precinct
2 Constable.
At that time, a group from the chamber,
without Williams’ knowledge, asked com¬
missioners court to name the library after
her.

The library will be the largest of the
county’s 24 branch libraries, and it opens
with the largest start-up collection— over
35,000 volumes.
Librarian Lee has been ordering books
for a year. “I think it will serve the com¬
munity, ’’she said.
Books on all subjects, including
bestsellers, will be available, as
magazines to check out. Magazines on
microfish are also available.
There will be an extensive children’s col¬
lection with picture books and easy readers,
along with audio visuals and audio tapes.
A wide variety of videos for adults and
children will be offered, but only those 18
and older can check them out.
