Northwest Branch Library grand opening

Okay. Excuse me. One here collection. Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Okay, A little sentence. So would you like to come before were black, walk in the front of the line and then we'll follow her and

they said no, that I didn't need it. I don't know what their inference was. And then they said that I was supposed to stand behind the counter, and Barry says, That's bad manners. To sit across the desk from your clientele, you're supposed to sit over on

the same side, kind of like the banker does when he gets a little bit concerned about the loan. You know, he moves around on your side, and I'm no longer concerned about what we're getting done up here. But I would like to welcome you to this

and give you a brief history of the bond issues, of course, were approved by the voters, and we put in libraries. Location is unknown, and we started work at that point in trying to get things done. And I would point with pride to the commissioner's court.

Okay. Is here tonight representing John that I think has done a grand job and was certainly a big support and getting this library in this location and without the full support of the court, we could not achieve that. But because you voted for the bonds and

we were able to sell them within their interest rates, we were able to get the money together to put this together. Then we were looking at a location. Where can we put it? We didn't have enough money to buy the land and build a building. So

out of the blue comes Rosa chain. And I could not get into this without talking about Rosa Rosa, Come on. Here's the front now your basketball type. But, uh, she came up with the concept of where we could do it and how we can put a

complex together. And I can only tell you that she's got a wonderful club. Next door is a great place. But the club in the library and the court has committed a courthouse to the same area right next door. And so we'll have a complex here that

I think will be a real community center because Rosa got involved and we've got everything going and again the full support of all the court for which I think is very helpful when you get people like Rosa going, and I want to talk a little bit

more about other people. But Rosa, I want to introduce other people. But you a special thanks to Rosa Tank for her part in his library thing. Interesting thing that I get as I get into public office and one of my people this morning said, Commissioner, if

you do this particular thing, actually fussing about are not paying your bills on time. Uh, Mac, right after I wrote a letter about getting sweating windows in the administration building, straightened out and said, Mr you won't win a popularity contest. Oh, my comment was almost spontaneous.

I didn't run for this position to win a popularity contest. I ran for it to do a job, and as long as I feel like I'm doing a good job and I have God on my side, or if I can stay on God's side, then I

let the world take care of itself because I think that I have fulfilled my obligations and I think with the welcoming the first thing that we should always do recognize our friends and supporters and then be sure that we're under the cover of God Is Reverend

Harry Wood here? Yeah, from the Wynwood Presbyterian Church. Been asked to give the implication tonight. Pray for the success of this venture. So let us pray Almighty and eternal God, you look upon all that you have created and declared it to be good and who have

sustained your created order even down to the very present moment. Once again, we invoke your presence as we join together in a community celebration. As we prepare to dedicate this building, we are reminded that you have elected to maintain so much of your creation by human

hands. Not only so, but you have given us the challenge and the opportunity to make your world better. Where are having been here tonight? As we dedicate this new library for use by the community, it will serve. We ask for your spiritual blessing upon it. We

know you to be a god for whom human wholeness and health our primary importance. A god who longs to see human minds grow and mature. And human beings enjoy those periods of recreation for recreating their own lives. So we pray that you will bless this endeavor.

We thank you. Oh, God, For those who have given so much of themselves towards the establishing of this library, bless them for their efforts by encouraging its use in future days and years. Let it become a community resource for young and old alike that all who

passed this way may find life to be richer and more complete for having made use of it. Now bless us all. Oh, God, by bringing us to an awareness of your presence as you share in this celebration, what we pray in your name and in your

spirit Oh, man, I hope that we will forever be aware of God's presence. As you come into this Republic facility, I don't know a proper order to really introduce all of the people that I have to introduce. But as I stated earlier, I am one of

five members of the commissioner's court, and I think that we are at this time is a community enjoying a relationship among the five people. And I think particularly among John Lindsay and myself, that has brought a great deal of progress to the community. And for that

reason, I'm gonna put K Shell at first because K is here tonight representing John Lindsay. And John is probably out somewhere else representing the court doing some other function. He seems to be there every night. But John certainly did support us very strongly on this and

helped us in the debates and the if you will that phone calls and make sure that we got everything down the way we wanted to do it in addition to okay. And the other members? I don't think it's any other representatives court here tonight. The man

that probably from the county, is going to be most important for all of you to know Mr McCain. Now, Mac is a super fine person, and he is in charge of the buildings for the county. Now, if anything happens out here like, the flower beds are

a little bit high in the front or, you know, if something isn't just right, uh, you can always get Mr Mack on the phone and he will take care of it. This man has been around the county for a long time, and he put up with

those other four people on the court. Of course, no problem putting up with me because I'm so easy to get along with. But he is a great person to work with, and I think you will enjoy them in your area. I'd also like to appoint recognize

people that are important to us. Where's Tom? George? Tom? Right here that we're glad to have here tonight. Uh, Ed Newman was with me when we began this and kind of spearheaded this project. He's now gone into business for himself. Over here. He's hiding behind his

pretty wife, trying to look in perspective. You can't do that. Yeah. One of the things that I think all of you need to understand is the importance of the legislative operations in the state. And you're very fortunate out here. I think they have very kindly representing.

Very. It doesn't say too much. Where are you buried when you start? I just I'm sorry. When I get that close, I look at Kate Mary for the girls Little League. I told him that that reveals his age because if he were a little older, he

would understand that you want to stay out of those areas that create debate. Yeah, Barry, It represents I think very well your interest in the state Legislature. And he certainly has been a help to the commissioner's court here and giving us the power as an arm

of the state to function well in your behalf. And very we appreciate all that you're doing. I'm glad you weren't on the airplane that had trouble there. The building, I think, turned out beautiful. And it, uh, was a creation, if you will, in the mind of

Leroy, harm it. Leroy is a longtime friend of mine, but I think there I did an outstanding job. Roy, come on up here a little bit closer to the front and bring Mike with Mike. And but he tells me he is a man who did all

the work. But as you look around and you see things, you look at low maintenance. You look at aesthetic beauty. Uh, you have any special things you want to say about the building? We're very proud of it, and I want to thank My mike is just

recently become one of the partners in our firm. Uh, he is the designer of the project architect and partner in charge of the project. Excellent. job. I'm very proud of a concrete 25 serve its purpose. I think everyone here as they go along with it. Mikey.

Kurt. Maintenance free. So now we have a commitment for the original obligation, which we passed on. That's what we're looking for. Uh, Bill, Long of long construction. That works the quagmire feel. Yeah. Here he is. Back over here. Glad to have you with Bill. You had

a few much problems out here from time to time, but you struggle right on through it, and we got a reasonable period of time. And we appreciate the fine job. Don Jackson is here, representing my crystals office. Uh, everything that we do is reviewed by the

county attorney to make sure that we don't violate any laws. Because, believe me, we don't want to uh, don we appreciate your coming out for those of you that aren't aware. My crystals wife is very critically ill. And he could not be with us this evening,

but I think that you're being here. Don is appreciated very much. Thank you. We have I don't know who else. I moved him off looking Carl. Scout big. Nothing. If you didn't find anything wrong. Mike is going to We already know that it wasn't legalized fall.

So, uh, this library and for those of you that are to where I was on the Houston school board for nine years and we try to get libraries in schools as close as possible because we would like for them to work together. And I think we

have a good example of that over here at Maskey School. And this is how and levy spreading trigger coming. Yeah. Really? Yeah. What? Yes. No. Okay. Change. Right. Thank you. On behalf of the students of Mask Elementary and you'd

like to welcome you to the neighborhood. Yeah. Yeah, You're gonna take that? I think that is super fine. That's what we're looking for. Let's give him another one of the nice parts about my job that I get to take your tax money and then turn around

and spend it the way that you think that we should, I hope. But it's not my My library is not the county's library. It's yours. It has been yours from the beginning. From the concept. Everyone here works for you. And I think always you should remember

that it's been participation that we've had, and we'll make some more right conditions on that in a little bit. Yeah. When do I get to talk about the friends of the library of it? Okay, whatever you want. I would before I really present formally. I would

point out that to me, one of the greatest problems of public office is that for too long government has tried to give too much to too many. And one thing that I have tried very hard to do was to support a community, not to get it

everything that it wanted, but to give it the opportunity to help itself. And I would just There's no way I can tell you as many things as I'd like to say about the fact that you're opening now with over 17 volumes. And it's not because of

the county that you did it because your people in this area got out and raised $43,900. As of the time that we got this, probably. Yeah. Wait, let me give you one while we'll put this on a bulletin board. Where are those that want to join

the friends of the library grip. Yeah. Okay, but 89 old book 89 Old book. Anybody here? Not remember 89 old books. When Francis, When you write it down, Marcia. Uhh birthmark. Uh huh. I want to formally turn over if it were mine to turn over which

it really is. To the friends of the library, to the community. And Marshall, with the activity that you have shown raising this kind of money, the interest that has been demonstrated by Rosa by the community in general, I think only spurs the court to do more.

And I want you to know that we all monitor the amounts of money that are raised because that is a clear indication. And where there is the interest that is indicated by this kind of activity, we are more supportive because we know that it's really appreciate

it. And, Marcia, I think that y'all have picked the ball up. It is your library, and we're delighted to have a part in operating it with you. Marshall? Yeah. I'm happy to accept this library for the citizens of cyber. I would like to personally thank Commissioner

Alice Bixby and the Commissioner's Court for enabling us to have this facility. This library has become a reality through the hard work of the entire community. It is a wonderful feeling to see a group of individuals united for one cause to improve the cultural life of

our area. A library affects all people, young and old. This attitude was felt throughout the planning of this project. What a wonderful feeling it was when you asked a mother, a father, a school, a church or a business for their help and each gave without hesitation.

I will never forget. On a cold January day, all the vans, pickups and station wagons driving up to our book sale location, announcing that they had collected more used books and the name of the subdivision they were represented. Each area felt that they had contributed to

the cause and were part of this community. I also want to thank my tireless officers and workers who helped us raise this $43,000 to be used for extra books, reference materials and equipment. Each had their responsibilities and account and accomplish their tasks, plus more for their

suggestions and hard work. Our fundraising went smoothly to show appreciation. The library will have this plan honoring those who made it work, coming with free in honor to those who work to create a library for which Cyprus will be proud of the friends of the library.

their generous contribution of $4500 which was used for additional Children's books. I also have a plaque in honour. The rotaries help to us in appreciation to the Cypress Fairbanks Rotary for your generosity and dedication to the Northwest Library in the Cyprus community. Yeah, Okay. Thank you,

everyone, for all your help, appreciate it Couldn't. Marshall. The only thing I can tell you is that now that we have it built and we've started to fill the shelves, your work is just to get they won't. I have fun with Jim Fontina. There is a

contest, if you will, between those of us on the court as to which communities will support their government, their activities the most. And I think that this is an outstanding achievement which we will be able to use very effectively with more. And I appreciate it just

for what it will do for me personally. And arguing with Captain Park is our county library, but she is busy at home. You know, having little girls can't be with us tonight. And with her is a very able assistance that we have found can take over

in her absence. And we really don't dismiss cat. Okay, I did not say that I said that because I think you've got a great job and stand again far and to have been a real, real big help and just kept thinking looking. She will now introduce

all of the people that I've overlooked from the staff. Mhm, mhm. I certainly will. Also, I speak for Kathy as well as myself in needing to thank a few people, first of all, commissioner adults. Your support throughout this program that in value thank you very much

for all your support for the library. This is cold. Also, Commissioner Ethical has a special liaison to the library. Alice Bigsby, one of our two guardian angels. Tha thank you both for many commanders, Court as a whole has shown their support of the library, particularly this

library and generous appropriation for an opening day collection. And also find that staff for this one. We're most about that. Also, I must thank Marcia Carla Barile, her tireless at half of the library and the friends of the library and also the community as a whole.

You've really made us feel welcome. Thank you very much for that. There are a few members of the central library staff that are here that I'd like to single out because I had a great deal to do with this library. David Jones is our head of

technical services, his the man who's in charge of automation and in charge of ordering a cataloging process. So and David and his department has put all these books on the shelves sport his catalog. My brain is here today, and that's Rose Sign. Like all these by

hand, I don't know if Jean rollin here acquisitions like he had a problem right when we're leaving. So he didn't think that he is the person who actually does the ordering and makes it seem so easy to order $600 a year for us to make too

much of A. I think you all make sure that, um, the person who had a great deal to do with selecting the books and did a tremendous job, and I think tomorrow when you all come in to check out, we'll see what a good collection you

have here is Elaine plot and I thank her. Her counterpart in the Children's area is on a well deserved vacation. Osmond, who selected the books for the Children area very much have to think have a relatively new member of the staff who's in charge of keeping

the supplies coming out to the branches, Getting paid on time that Shelly Silver are administrative services manager. Now, I would like to introduce you to the West staff. Your staff here is a very experienced library staff. Great pride that I introduce. Shirley Ada comes in our

assistant librarian at the Northwest Branch, and she comes to us with experience of being the assistant librarian of the Deer Creek branch, very close to happen here. Jackie Davis is our reference librarian, and she comes to the Northwest branch after being a reference librarian and local

engineering work here and also a reference librarian at West Georgia College. Nancy Stewart is our Children's librarian. Nancy is a region of library school graduate, but she's an old library hand. She began her career in sixth grade as a library volunteer. There are also a very

able and experienced staff of desperate systems. These are the people who we don't be behind this desk serving you every day. Carol Hampton comes to us with a great deal of experience. When the Tulsa City County Library in Oklahoma, Betty Harris is another graduate of the

French Library. Lou, It comes to us from the Central Library catalog. Yeah, and Sheila Whitfield is also a former member of our central library staff. Grateful Office. Are janitors here as long maintenance as this library? It does require a little bit of maintenance. And Rick ably

demonstrated at Bear Creek that he was an excellent janitor and he killed where? Look at that. Right. I'm very happy today to see so many other staff members of the Harris County Library with this library. We have 21 branches and bookmobile, please raise your hand. Who

you all are. Yeah. Yeah, this is we have a fine and dedicated library staff, and it's a privilege to work with all of them and just real proud of everyone. Now, I would like to welcome you to receptions that is being sponsored by the friends of
