THE HOUSH
MRS. RUTH POOLEY
IS TO RESIGN AS
COUNTY LIBRARIAN
Mrs. Ruth Underwood Pooley,
Monday handed her resignation as
county librarian for Harris County
to the commissioners court, with
the request that it be made ef¬
fective November 30. No reason
for the resignation was given.
Miss Elnora Edgar, first assist¬
ant librarian, has been recom¬
mended by Mrs. Pooley as her suc¬
cessor, and it is understood that the
state library board will join in the
recommendation.
Mrs. Pooley has served as county
librarian since the fall of 192 3,
when she succeeded Miss Eucy
Fuller, now Mrs. Lucy Fuller Gross,
librarian of the Tyrrell Public Li¬
brary of Beaumont.
Alluding to Mrs. Pooley’s resig¬
nation, County Judge Spencer said:
“Mrs. Pooley has been an extremely
valuable department head, and it
will be difficult to replace her.”
Commissioner Dreyfus said the
county library had been about the
only department of the county
about wpich he had heard no criti-f
cism, and. he was sorry to learn of
Mrs. Pooley’s intention of resign¬
ing.
When Mrs. Pooley, as Miss Ruth
Underwood, first took up county
library work, the county library
occupied a small space in an unfin¬
ished room on the fifth floor of
the court house. Twelve rural sta¬
tions were established that year.
Now the county library organiza¬
tion consists of a spacious, well-
equipped county library on the
fifth floor, and 74 branches
throughout Harris County. People
of the remote sections, who for-1
merly made little use of the
library facilities, now are its heav¬
iest users, according to the records.
Total circulation of books has
grown from about 19,576 in 1931
to 320,000 for the past year.
Both Mrs. Pooley and-Miss Edgar
are graduates of the University of
Texas and trained librarians. Miss
Edgar formerly was assistant libra¬
rian of Baylor College, Belton, and
spent one summer doing branch
work in the New York Public
library.
