Months passed and the Friends discovered that even though
the County would love to grant the requests of all of its

The County finally said that it might see its way clear to
building the library, but it certainly didn’t have the money
to buy land. The Friends spent many hours looking at maps
to get an idea of who owned what pieces of vacant property.
Several developers were approached about a land donation.
Vincent Kickerillo responded with an offer of one and a half
acres across from Memorial Parkway Junior High School on
Westgreen Boulevard. That breakthrough was cause for
celebration .

Not long after
In 1899, twelve-year-old Maud Smith came to Harris County
with her family. Eight years later she married Emil Marks.
By 1917 they had moved into a new house on 640 acres of land
Texas. The family grew with the addition of four
children, Emory, Atha, Travis, and Maudeen. The LH7 ranch
grew also, and by the 1930s grazed more than 6,000 head of
cattle on 30,000 acres. Emil Marks didn't get to spend all
of his time in the saddle though. Maud was an early
