News from the Friends of the Maud Marks Libra
THANKS TO MARSIt HUDSON
In 1984, Margie Hudson put a little announcement in the Katy
Times. She thought our community needed a public library. Any¬
one else who shared her interest was invited to a coffee at her
house. About 30 people showed up and a Friends of the Library
group was formed. This was the beginning of a nine-year effort
that resulted in the grand opening of the Maud Smith Marks Li¬
brary on July 27, 1993.
The ride was rocky at times, but never dull. Harris County said
it might be able to build a library, but didn't have the money to
buy land. The Friends spent many hours looking at maps to get
an idea of who owned what pieces of vacant property. Several
developers were approached about a land donation. Vincent
Kickerillo responded with an offer of one and a half acres on |
Westgreen Boulevard. The Friends gathered at Margie's house
and celebrated into the night.
Once they had the land, the county agreed to begin construc¬
tion on the building. Years passed before the actual work was I
started, but the Friends didn't give up. They met regularly and I
never let the county commissioner forget that they were waiting.
Margie and her followers organized letter-writing campaigns and
gathered community support. They also began holding fund¬
raisers to make money for the new library. Finally the land on
Westgreen was cleared and construction got underway.
The Precinct 3 commissioner thought the library should be
named after one of the early residents of the Katy area. After a
little research, the name Maud Marks surfaced as the best candi¬
date. In 1917, Maud and Emil Marks moved into a new house on
640 acres of land in Barker, Texas. Ranching agreed with Maud,
but she was worried that the children in the area did not have
access to enough reading material. Maud had Harris County de¬
liver books to her on a regular basis. She kept the collection on
shelves in a nearby church and checked books out to area chil¬
dren and adults. Maud Smith Marks was a perfect name for our
new library.
While the library was under construction, the Friends continued
to raise money. Little by little the dollars grew along with the walls
of the building. During all of these activities, Margie kept us or¬
ganized and working hard. When the library finally opened in
1993, the Friends of the Maud Marks Library had accumulated
almost $100,000 to help pay for books, equipment, and pro¬
grams.
Now Margie Hudson is leaving Katy and moving to Virginia to
be near her darling grandchildren. We will certainly miss her
dedication and her smiling face. If she does as much for the folks
in her new community as she did for us, they will indeed be lucky
people. Thanks a million, Margie.
