As president of the Friends of Freeman Memorial Library, I am vitally aware of the importance of this type of fund raising endeavor. The Friends of Freeman Memorial Library is a non-profit organization which was established to supplement the funds received from the Harris County Library system. The Freeman Memorial Library is the second largest library in the Harris County system. It provides a very important service to both professionals and residents in the Clear Lake area. In 1987, the Freeman Memorial Library answered over 40,000 reference requests. The highly skilled professionals who access the library demand a high quality of reference and technical materials. It is through the donations of organizations such as yours that we are able to maintain such a high quality of library materials for our patrons. The Friends generally raise funds through our monthly used book sales and our annual membership drives. A few weeks ago, the Freemam Memorial Library was notified that the book budget for the coming year, from the county funds, would be cut by more than 30%. This will significantly affect the quality of service currently provided by our library; therefore, contributions and donations raised by the Friends will take on an even greater role. This year, the Friends have spent over $5,000.00 for new books, over $800.00 for new microfiche readers and contributed over $2300.00 towards reference materials. I would like to ask you, on behalf of the Friends of the Freeman Memorial Library, to be considered as one of the recipients of next year's "Band on the Lake" program. The Friends will be happy to provide all the support required to make the day a mutual success.
