Buy a Book campaign starts;
cablevision to run tote board
Doorbells will be ringing this weekend as
the community-wide Buy a Book for the Li¬
brary campaign gets underway in King-
wood and Forest Cove. Interested citizens
who want to know how the campaign is
doing can watch the weather strip on King-
wood Cablevision Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.
for hourly updates on how many books have
been bought for the library.
The goal of the campaign is to give each
resident the opportunity to increase the
number of books and other services and ma¬
terials available through the new Kingwood
Library.
It is estimated the average cost of a new
book is $12.50. For a contribution of $12.50,
each resident may buy one book for the li¬
brary, or for multiples of $12.50, buy a book
for each member of the family.
Other contributions may be earmarked
for the purchase of more equipment or ma¬
terials. A few of the items which librarians
indicate are needed include additional mi-
cro-fiche reader printers, encyclopedias,
materials on micro-fiche, records, cassettes
and many reference materials which can¬
not be squeezed into current budgets.
A new facility, the Kingwood Library for¬
mally opened for service Aug. 21. It is locat¬
ed at 4102 Rustic Woods Dr. at Lake
Houston Parkway. The building encom¬
passes 12,000 square feet and has shelf
space for an optimum collection of 65,000
volumes. On opening day, the library
housed a beginning collection of 19,000
volumes.
To date, circulation of books and mater¬
ials through the library has passed the
40,000 mark, which means the library col¬
lection has turned over twice in two months.
According to library officials, the King-
wood Libary is one of the highest damand
facilities in the Harris County system.
Friends of the Library Kingwood was
founded in 1979 to support the local library
service. The first effort of the Friends was
directed at the successful passage in 1979 of
the bond issue which made construction of
the present facility possible. Approximately
180 local residents are currently members
of the Friends.
Friends' spokesmen point out all books
and materials purchased through the Buy a
Book Campaign will be selected by the
Kingwood professional library staff.
Kingwood librarians detailed their needs
to the Friends who then publicized them
during the campaign.
A massive community effort has gone into
preparing for this weekend’s march.
Beginning Sept. 1, the community was
broken down into Kingwood’s 12 villages
and T orest Cove.
A .1 iat time village captains were recruit¬
ed. They are Darcel Weller, Bear Branch;
Kat . Muhlee, Sand Creek; Norma Payne,
BUY A BOOK . Block workers will be knocking on every door this weekend to ask
residents to buy a book for the new Kingwood Library. A donation of $12.50 will buy one book.
Donations may be made for research materials, records, tapes and many other items. The
drive is sponsored by the Kingwood Friends of the Library. Above, block worker Donna Kirk

Judy Black, Foster’s Mill; Mary Hender¬
son, Hunter’s Ridge; Donna Kirk, King’s
Forest and Kay Kelso, N. Woodland Hills.
The captains then recruited section
leaders responsible for a number of blocks
and the section leaders called block
workers. An estimated 500 residents wll be
out asking for book contributions this
weekend.
Library Friends has not set a specifiic
goal for the campaign. According to Ken
Harwood, Friends’ president, the drive is
simply meant to give everyone the oppor¬
tunity to strengthen the services of the
