JC’s new library annex -
a study in work, devotion
The Jacinto City Library has a new
look - a bigger look, you might say.
That’s because of a 16 foot by 28 foot
addition that is now in use, an annex
constructed to the south side of the
smallish library facility that librarian
Dorothy Bowyer says will mean new
services, needed room and a remodel¬
ed interior when all work is com¬
pleted.
The addition, paneled and carpeted,
presently awaits shelving, which will
be purchased by the county from
funds out of the recent Harris County
bond issue.
But the heroes of the addition, the
ones who made the $15,000 renovation
and expansion possible, are all Jacin¬
to Citians.
Boyer said the Jacity Fric
Library organization raised $2,200
and, during a July the Fourth Fest
last year another $3,000 was raised.
To that, the City of Jacinto City added
around $10,000 and the project was
taken off the drawing board and put
onto the site.
Bowyer said that around 50
members of the Friends of the
Library participated in the project
over a span of about two years. The
group has a current membership of
around 26, she added.
It was, in fact, the first concern of
the Friends when they organized in
November of 1974 that the city needed
a larger library. But plans to push ac¬
quiring the old Jacinto City Bank fell
through, and the addition with renova¬
tion was the compromise they were
able to coordinate.
Along with the new library area,
partitions in the older part will be
coming down, and the checkout desk
moved to beside the fron door. The ad¬
dition provided a public rest room and
a staff office, and the grand plan in¬
volves paneling and rearranging the
entire library, with a Childrens Col¬
lection, table and seating in the new
area and restructured adult areas in
the open area that will be created by
taking out the existing walls in the
original building.
Bowyer has been the librarian in
charge of the facility since it opened,
in 1958. Working with her is Dell
Avery, assistant librarian and the
person in charge of the childrens col¬
lection and summer childrens pro¬
jects.
Jacity librarian Dorothy Bowyer, left, and assistant librarian Dell Avery stand with the new annex
of the library behind them. The area will house the library’s Childrens Collection of books and materials.
