Elem. Art In Local Libraries
Students of the elementary
schools in the Galena Park
School District are having
their work on exhibit for the
next several weeks in the three
branches of the Harris County
Library in the area. These are
the Galena Park, Jacinto City,
and Woodforest libraries.
The exhibit was organized
by Mrs. Pat Heuberger, Mrs.
Roberta Longnecker, Mrs.
Dian Kosatka, and Miss Ginger
Daniel,
The exhibit contains two-
and three-dimensional work,
such as macrame’, batik, plas¬
ter, vermiculite, papier-ma¬
che, and wire sculpture, as
well as chalk, paste Is, and
other media.

7, at MacArthur Elementary
School in Galena Park.
These were the three class¬
es, containing 14 students
each, being taught by Mrs.
Mary Cobb under the summer
instructional program.
Mrs. Bowyer discussed the
summer reading program of
the Harris County Library and
distributed copies of a booklet,
“Libraries and You,” to each
child.
Mrs. Dorothy Bowyer, city
librarian, has announced that
the registration for the Sum¬
mer Reading Club will begin
on May 15. Theme this year
will center around Treasure
Hunting.
Mrs. Bowyer was one of a
panel of citizens who appeared
on the program for Pyburn
Elementary School PTA on
Tuesday of this week, dis¬
cussing opportunities availa¬
ble for children and youth.
Other panel members were
Mrs. Oneta Frank, neighbor¬
hood chairman for San Jacinto
Council Girl Scouts. George
Risner. commissioner of
parks and recreation. Galena
Park: and a representative
from Sam Houston Council of
Boy Scouts.

The Jacinto City Civic Club
continued its project of beau¬
tifying spots around the citv
with a planter box at the base
of the name-sign at the library.
The portulaca planted in the
box is now in full bloom

The Story Telling hour spon¬
sored by the Jacinto City Li¬
brary got off to a good start
on Tuesday, July 11, with 11
preschoolers, four, five and
six years old, at the 10:30-
11:30 session and five first and
second graders at the 12 to 1
PM session. Mrs. Kathleen
McNeill is conducting the ses¬
sions at the Community Build¬
ing. The program will continue
through Aug. 15, each week.

The Jacinto City Library
has just received a number
of distinctly not run-of-the-
mill magazines from Mrs. M.
Roton, 10926 Flaxman. They
may be on the shelves by this
time, but the library staff has
been perusing them with fasci¬
nation. “Good Old Days”, a
modern publication printing
pictures, poems and stories
from about 1800, Lady’s Cir¬
cles, and Woman’s Homecraft.
From a patron who was
moving out of town, they re¬
ceived a boxfull of Reader’s
, Digest Condensed Books, some
of which are duplications the
library already has and will
be offered for sale.

The new five -week rotation
of books from the Harris
County Central Library to the
Jacinto City Branch were re¬
ceived last Friday, says Mrs.
Doris Bowyer, librarian. “We
have a lot of shining new fic¬
tion and non-fiction,” she
said, “as well as a new set
of Compton’s Encyclopedia for
the reference section.”

like local teachers to know
that she has a little book on
loan from the Texas State
Library which they wil 1 find
interesting. It lists sources
of free materials, such as
pictures, posters, and maps
which are available to
educators. The Jacinto City
Library has placed some of
these in their own pamphlet
file.
