Books Given
To Library
Donations of several multiple-
volume collections and of 65
hard-bound individual books,
most of which are Book of the
Month Club selections, have
been announced at the Jacinto
City Branch, Harris County Li-
jbrary, at Muscatine and Mer
cury.
Mrs. Dorothy Bowyer, branch;
librarian, said the collections in-J
elude: “My Book House,” a 14-
volume children’s series; “Land
and People,” a seven-volume
group on world populations;
“Journeys Through Bookland,”
an eight-volume collection and
“Children’s Classics,” seven-
volume collection.
Those and the 65 individuals;*
were donated by private citi¬
zens.
She also has received a new
i shipment of books, number and
names to be announced, of new
[books by purchase with funds
allotted her from the Jacinto
City Parks and Recreation De
partment.
Another group is available
from monies earned through
sale of duplicate books on hand
at the library. These names
also will be listed later.
A number of new books have
recently been added to the
shelves of the Jacinto City
Library, according to Mrs.
Dorothy Bowyer. A number
of books purchased with funds
alloted the Parks and Recre¬
ation Department in the city
budget have arrived. Two or¬
ders of books bought with
funds accumulated from sale
of duplicate books in the lib¬
rary have also arrived. Among
these books are eight titles
on recent best-seller lists.
The library has also received
20 books which have been re¬
bound. They were mostly light
fiction, teen-age stories, and
westerns.
Richard’s Pawn Shop has
donated a 14-volume set of
“My Book House," seven vol¬
umes of the "Land and Peo¬
ples Series’’, and eight- volume
set of "Journeys Through
Bookland", a 7-volume set of
"Children's Classics”, and
four volumes of "High School
Subjects Self-Taught".
A1 Point has donated 65
hard - bound books, mostly
Book-of-the-Month selections
and 11 pocket books; Mrs.
Maurice R. Breen, 10321 Flax-
man, donated "The Prophet"
and several other hard-bound
books, and Linda McCreadie
has recently donated a num¬
ber of western pocket books.
The Book Discussion Group
of Jacinto City will meet Tues¬
day, February 15, at 7:30 p.m.
at the City Library on Mer¬
cury Drive. The meeting, re¬
gularly scheduled for the sec¬
ond Tuesday of each month,
was postponed a week by the
weather. The group, led by
Rev. George Miller of Peace
United Presbyterian Church,
will discuss "Man for All
Seasons’’. The public is cor¬
dially invited.
Both the Jacinto City and
Galena Park City Libraries
expected a new shipment of
books from toe Harris County
Library February 9. The lists
will include some late fiction,
as well as non-fiction , for
all ages.

The Jacinto City Library
staff has added 48 books to
its shelves at the annual sale
of the .Veteran’s Hospital Auxi¬
liary. These are mostly fiction
and mysteries.
In addition Mr. and Mrs.
John Standley of Songwood
donated 38 college and high
school test books, which Mrs.
Dorothy Bowyer, librarian
says,* will be "a big help”.
Other donations included 47
packet books by David Batts,
51 pocket books from Mrs.
Mary Louise Christie, Flem¬
ing Drive, and others from
Pat Jones and Mrs. Lisa Thur¬
man.
The library has on display
plnatas made of papier mache
which won bthe ribbons at the
Boy Scout Exposition at the
Coliseum, May 6-7. These
were made by Cub Scouts
of Den 4, pack 301, under the
supervision of Mrs. Joyce
Garren.

Linda McCreadie ! donated
about 20 paperbacks, mostly
westerns, as well as material
for a pamplet file on Texas
governors, history of prison
systems, and game - bird

Galena Park, donated a box of
over 50 paperbacks. John Pee- j
bles donated a number of late i
magazines. A friend in Pasa- i
dena“ donated 47 hard-bound
books most of which wiU be |
offered for sale, as the donor j
intended.
Pi Xi Chapter of Beta Sigma j
Phi has made its annual don¬
ation of toe current Yearbook j
to add to the Compton’s En¬
cyclopedia which the chapter
had previously placed on the
library shelves.
Mrs. Bowyer reports a good
response to the summer read¬
ing club, with 70 members
signed up in toe first week.
She reports also toe addition
of very good volunteer help
for the summer.

Mrs. Doris Garren, assist¬
ant in the city library, has
been attending book sales dur¬
ing the past several days. She
bought some new books at
A’Cela Book Store in Pasa¬
dena, which was going out of
business, and added some ju¬
venile non-fiction volumes and
three teen books, at half-
price. On Friday she att mded
the sale of used books at Mey¬
er land Plaza, sponsored an¬
nually by the womens’ auxil¬
iary of Brandeis University.

Week April 17-23
All North Shore libraries
will be celebrating National
Library Week beginning next
Sunday, from April 17 to Ap¬
ril 23.

April 5, both the Jacinto City
and the Galena Park Library
will receive a selection of new
books from the county library,
in the regular shipment re¬
ceived each ten weeks. A gen¬
eral assortment of books is
expected.
Two Boy Scouts helped out
j in the library last week, fill—
I ing requirements for merit
| badges. George Harmon,
: worked in the library all day
i last Friday. Billy French,
[ working on Community Ser-
!' vice badge, donated ten hours
service to the library and
Recreation Department, doing
everything from washing win¬
dows in the library and shelv¬
ing books, to helping clean up
the surrounding lawns.
Three branches of the Har¬
ris County Library, plus the
traveling Bookmobile, serve
the North Shore area. A new
one is being planned for the
North Shore Village area on
Uvalde.
The Jacinto City Library,
1026 Mercury, located on the
city’s Wilke Park, is open
from noon to 9:00 p.m. on Mon¬
day and Thursday. On Tuesday,
Wednesday and Friday; it is
open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00
p.m. and on Saturday morning,
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Mrs.
Dorothy Bowyer is librarian,
assisted by Mrs. H. P. Gar¬
ren.
The Channelview Library,
531 Crockett at Highway 73, is
open a full 40 hours each week,
under the direction of Mrs.
Thelma Barnes, librarian. On
Monday it is open 9:00 a.m. to
8:00 p.m. but is not open on
Saturday at all. On all other
days of the week, it is open
from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The Galena Park Library
is located at 1702 Third Street,
directed by Mrs. Eugene
Zoch. On Monday and Tuesday
it is open from 1:00 to 8:00
p.m,; Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m. , on Thursday and
Friday, 1:00 to 6:00 p.m., and
on Saturday morning 9:00 to
12:00 noon.
The hours and stops made
by the Bookmobile may be se¬
cured by telephone from the
Harris County Library, CA
8-8311, Extension 104.
Each branch will have spe¬
cial displays and book mar¬
kers during Library Week,
with books for all ages and
interests. The Jacinto City
branch will have a pot of hot
coffee and Girl Scout cookies
to serve guests.

lightful Harlequin romance
paperback books have been
received by the Jacinto City
Library from Mrs. Clyde
Speed, 14034 Holly Park. Part
of the shipment of 48 titles
was shared with the Galena
Park Public Library, accord¬
ing to Mrs. Dorothy Bowyer,
city librarian. These are ro¬
mances by English authors,
published in Canada, which
Mrs. Speed buys for her
mother, in a small non-library
town, who sends them back
for re-use after she finished
them, in new condition.
