Community Needs
The week of April 12-18 has
been proclaimed National Li¬
brary Week and throughout the
country an active campaign is
being carried on to persuade
more people to read. The theme
Is “Wake Up and Read”.
The Sentinel is bringing you
information about the library !
facilities in the North Shore area
and urges you to get acquainted
with them.

In the past few years it has
been my pleasure to serve in our
growing community as librarian.
It has been a time of progress
for our community too. During
this time the facilities of the li¬
brary have been used by many
organizations, Scouts, teachers,
students and patrons for study,
research, and pleasure.
Jacinto City Library Has
1000th Borrower
The Jacinto City Branch Li¬
brary which will not be a year
©Id until July has already reach¬
ed 1000 borrowers. Located next
to the Recreation Building the
library h#,s a collection of about
3600 books, which are changed
from time to time and new |
books brought from the central j
Harris County Library.
Last year in the first 6 months j
It was open, the library circu- }
lated 11,521 books, which is a j
good record since die library is j
open only 15 hours per week, j
The library has books fob all i
ages and groups and requests are |
taken for books which are not I
on the shelves.
Merchants Feature National J
Library Week
.Jacinto City merchants are
со-
j
operating withh the library in ;
displaying posters and (books in
their windows for National Li¬
brary Week, April 12-18. Loden’s
Hardware Store is featuring “Do¬
it- Yourself5* books; Gibson’s has
a poster proclaiming books as
good CLEAN entertainment,
Danburg’s posters follow the j
theme of keeping in Style and ;;
Step with good reading. Christ¬
mas Furniture has a display of i
books with the caption “Books j
Belong in the Home, Too.” The
public is urged by the proclama- j
tion of National Library Week j
to “Wake Up and Read.”
Library Is Service Project
Girl Scout Troop 1319 of Ja¬
cinto City took the local library
as their community service pro¬
ject when the Jacinto City
Branch of the Harris County Li¬
brary opened last July: Two
girls are assigned to help the
librarian, Mrs. Dorothy Bowyer
of 10613 Muscatine, each time
the library is open. Duties in¬
clude the stamping of date-due
cards, alphabetizing of book I
cards, placing cards in returned !
books, shelving books, and keep¬
ing the library neat. Special pro¬
jects during the year included
book sales, decorating the library
Christmas tree, and the making
of posters for Book Week in ;
November and National Library I
Week, April 12-18.

A vote of Thanks to Mrs. Betty
Deville for supplying the rooms
in the Community Center for
housing the library. The vision
and the help of the Pilot Club
members made our library a
reality here for our community.
Mrs. Mary P. Butler, head li¬
brarian for the County has had
our best interests in mind and
has helped me to supply the
needed books for our students
and teachers in their research
and study. The library has grown
in many ways. It is amazing to
find that many of the adult pa¬
trons have found relaxation and
pleasure, as well as the students.
In view of National Library
Week, it is with joy that at long
last the fact that the library in
a community plays a very im¬
portant part is being recognized
universally. We have hopes of a
better library in the future, and j
as your librarian I will endeavor j
to serve you, our patrons, to the I
best of our facilities. During this
very special week no fines will j
be charged for books over-due,
so now is your opportunity to |
bring in that over-due book.

Galena Park
The Galena Park Branch of
the Harris County Library open¬
ed its doors to Galena Park resi¬
dents in June 1948.
1 It was located in the Com-
j munity Building, later moving to
j its present location at 1702 Third.
As the library grew the city of
Galena Park, realizing the need
! for expansion of its library, did
something about it. Renovations
were made and an extra room
was added. This was finished in
pine paneling with shelves to
match, which added much to the
attractiveness of the library.
The city pays part of the sal- ;
ary of the librarian and at pres- !
ent are alloting money to buy
books for the Galena Park Li- j
brary.
According to the librarian,
Mrs. W. A. Becker the circula- j
ti&n has more than tripled since
the first year. The monthly
! circulation for February and
March exceeded the three thous¬
and books to provide interesting
j reading from the youngest reader j
| to the adult.
Mrs. Beeler extends to every- \
one a cordial invitation to visit
the library during National Li-
i brary Week, beginning April 12.
| The hours are 1 to 5 on Monday,
! Wednesday, Thursday and Fri-
| day and 4:60 to 8:00 on Tuesday.
