Library Plans
Progressing
Plans for a branch of the
Harris County Library in Ja¬
cinto City moved along last
week with the selection of a
library board chairman, the
setting of a library open
house date and plans for a
sale of excess books.
Donald C. Parrish of 10133
Chadwick was chosen chair¬
man at a meeting of the li¬
brary board. Mrs. E L. Mc¬
Gowan of 10406 S. Oswego
was named secretary.
A library open house is set
for June 29, when the build¬
ing which will house the li¬
brary is expected to have
been moved to the city park
from its present location next
to the police station.
The library will be open
for use about July 1.
Mrs. Dorothy Bowyer of
10613 Muscatine, Jacinto
City librarian, has announced
a book sale for Saturday from
3 to 5 p.m. in the library.
The books are those which
were donated but failed to
meet library requirements or
are in bad condition.
About 300 books will be
sold at 25 cents each.
the books and librarian.
The building to be used is
presently an adjunct to the
city police headquarters
щ
Jacinto City. The wood frame
structure will be moved to
the city park just south of
the recreation building.
Mrs. Dorothy Bowyer of
10613 Muscatine, an enthu¬
siastic worker for the library
cause, is expected to ¥e ap¬
pointed librarian, although of¬
ficial confirmation has not
been made.
Mrs. Mary P. Butler, county
librarian, said the action of
the Jacinto City officials in
providing the building and the
interest of Jacinto City resi¬
dents were indication that the
library would become a real¬
ity.
Efforts to get the library
began last fall when Jacinto
City began negotiations with
the county. The petition for
a branch library received ap¬
proval early this year when
the budget was set by Com¬
missioners Court.
Date Not Set
Date of the opening of the
library is not set, but Mrs.
Butler said county library of¬
ficials would likely meet soon
with Jacinto City officials to
decide on a date.
The library board appointed
by Mayor Holder is composed
of Mrs. Amy Chandler, 10215
Market; Mrs. G. W. Thompson,
10914 Lane; Mrs. E. L. Mc¬
Gowan, 10406 S. Oswego, and
Donald C. Parrish, 10133
Chadwick.
Mrs. Bowyer, probable li¬
brarian, has been taking
courses in library science at
the University of Houston.
Jacinto City heretofore has
depended on books from the
county bookmobile.
Mrs. Butler said the library
would likely be open at first
on a part-time basis.
Books for the library are
being collected by Jacinto City
residQnts. Donated books
may be delivered or sent to
the city clerk’s office next to
the water tower.
Tbe county librarian will as¬
