PROFILE
Jacinto City isaan incorporated city of about 12,000 population, bordered on
three sides by Houston and the other by Galena Fark. It is governed by an elected
mayor and five councilmen, with a city secretary who is hired. The city has an
efficient volunteer fire department, police department, and a city ambulance. The
recreation director, Mrs. Dee Bellotte, has her office in the city’s gymnasium,
which is next to the library, and the physical needs of the library are under the
city’s recreation department; headed by one of the coimcilnen,
Latin Americans moving into the city comprise about 40f- of the total population,
but since many of the older people and pre-schoolers speak no English and profess
little interest in Spa n i sh-lar. gua -e materials, the children are the main library
users of this ethnic group.
The economic level is generally low because many of the houses are rent-property
or comparatively low in purchase price. The workers commute to Houston, Baytown,
or are employed at local factories and companies, such as Armco Steel, SnokorSHpeking
Glass Co., the grain and paper mills. There are many professional people in the
city limits and more who live in surrounding areas. The library serves a five mile
radius, although there are other libraries in the area.
The city’s recreation department offers a wide range of activities, both indoor at
the gym and in the surrounding park area and swimming pool. There are fields for
girls and boys baseball leagues, football; and tennis courts, playground equipment,
and pavillenssand picnic tables. Indoor activities include exdrcise classes for
men and women, gymnastic classes, and competition, volley and basketball, table tennis,
and classes in knitting, crocheting, and various crafts from time to time. She
city has a small two-room community building which is used five days a week for
the city recreation department sponsored

re-school classes; and it is used after
school and evenings in regularly scheduled scout, ssorority, and TOPS exercise g r
g roups, as well as other organizations from time to time. A new community
building is being built at the ed e of the park andwit will have a stage and a
number of meeting rooms, aand be a permanent location for senior citizens to meet.
The city is served by Houston School svstem on the rir-rtv,
