give other service until larger quarters were to be had. In 1932, Humble followed ^ooseCreek in circulation with 22,907 books circulated, an increase of 2,718 over 1931- This was its largest circulation up to this time, during 1932, the Humble library gained access to the Courtroom as a reading room. It had become almost impossilbe to continue efficient service in the congested quarters. A board meeting was called in November of 1933 to discuss plans for improving the housing conditions of the library through local cooperation and civic work administration. This was postponed, pending a decision of the use of the courthouse. Mrs. Esther Deckard retired from her duties as librarian in December of 1958, after thirty years of faithful service to this community. Hrs . Laurene Ragsdale took over duties as county Librarian in January of 1959- Due to our large circulation, the library is now open daily, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 8:00 A. M. to 5:00 P. M. and Tuesday and Thursday, 8:00 A.M. to 9:00 P. M. In March of 19б2 Mrs. Pauline Walters started work as assistant librarian to Mrs. Ragsdale and remained until October of 1970. Miss ЗагЬага Morris started to work as part time clerk in March of 1968. Mrs. Juanita Harvey took over Mrs. Walters duties over in October of 1970. In November of 1964, Mrs. Tom Shelton donated a lot and house in the 400 block of First St. and Ave D. for use as a library. The offer was accepted by the City Council and the city gave $500.00 toward remodeling this building. *11 carpenter work, covering of the floors, light fixtures, and wiring was donated by friends of the library. The sign was donated by the Humble State Bank. In February of 1965, the building was ready. • Our books were moved by the high school boy's with the help of Mr. Justus Smith. The library was renamed and called the Shelton Memorial library in memory of Mrs. Shelton's late husband, Mr. Tom Shelton. We remained in this building from February of 1965 to October of 1969- On February 10, 1968, the people of Humble went to the poles and voted on a bond for a new library building. The library moved to its present site October 9» 1969, under a new name. It was named the Octavia Fields Memorial Library, in memory of Mrs. Octavia Fields. The furnishings and shelves of the library were donated by the fields family in memory of their mother. The files and book drop were donated in memory of Mr. D. V. Kersh and Mr. Charlie Kersh. The World Globe im memory of Mr. 0. D. Frank. The Humble Intercontinental Rotary Club sponsers the library and helps in many ways such as additional shelving copy machine and the up-keep, table for copy machine.
