invitation
To Visit
Extended
National Book Week at
North Houston Memorial
Library this year will mark
several years of progress
toward building a better
library through the cooperation
of North Houstonians.
Friends of North Houston Me¬
morial Library wish to extend
a special invitation to the publie
to visit the library, 8705 Irving¬
ton. during National Book Week,
which is from November 16
through 22.
A. J. Moody, president of lha
organization, said "This library
is yours. Its success as a vital,
living part of your district de¬
pends upon you. So If you hava
not already visited us. coma
around and get acquainted.
This month completes fonr
years of library service, and
interest in it shows steady
progress, through increasing
circulation."
"Reading For Fun" is the 1952
slogan for National Book Week.
This year marks the 34th annual
celebration of Book Week for it
was in 1918 that the idea of a
Book Week observance originat¬
ed, in the mind of Franklin K.
Mathiews. chief librarian of Boy
J Scouts of America.
North Houston Memorial Li¬
brary has reading material for
i all who have lear
jis the hilarious "mosquito-bit¬
ten tale of life in the great
outdoors" when Mr. Snivvely.
nature lister, becomes a guest
at "The Camp At Lockjaw”,
by David McCord.
Another chuckle-evoking book
[is "Let 'em Eat Cheesecake" by
Earl Wilson, who manages to
make even the corniest of old
gags appear in modern dress and
'surroundings. Also humorous is
"Medicine Could Be Verse” a
collection of cleverly written sa¬
tire in rhyme by Charles G. Far-
num, M.D.
For those whose fun is in vi¬
carious travel we offer “Rome
And A Villa” by Eleanor Clark,
i which is especially fascinating in
that it is as much about America
and Americans as it is about
Rome and Romans.
«Up The .Missouri With Au¬
dubon" by Edu ard Harris is
«
newly-published diary kept
during the six months journey
of the naturalists. John F. Gib-
II son's "Memory Bay" combines
lo ail unusual degree a life of
action followed by its period
of contemplation.
To those whose fun is in read-
I ing serious tomes on internation¬
al affairs we recommend Win-
! ston Churchill’s "Closing The
Ring" fifth volume of his history
of the Second World War, and
K. W. Biiby’s "New Star In The
East” — "one of the most provoca¬
tive books ever written about a
[country (Israel) that is vital to
the peace of the world.”
Also. "The Enemy Within
I bv R. J. DeJaegher and Irene
Kuhn) in which they present
graphic and unforgelablc eye¬
witness reports on Red eon-
quest. saying flatly that such
might happen similarly in any
. nation.
The above books are for adult
