% HAPPENINGS July 1990 A Newsletter of Harris County Public Library Compaq Computers Donates PCs to Library System Cathy Park, County Librarian, is pleased to announce that Compaq Computer has generously donated 227 Compaq 640K Deskpro Computers to HCPL and delivery is expected within the next two months. The majority of the computers donated by Compaq will be upgraded and used to replace the current microfiche catalog with a CD-ROM public access catalog. The library has had a long range plan to replace the microfiche catalog with a CD-ROM public access catalog but the cost of the computer equipment necessary to make the change has been a major drawback. Now, because of the generous donation by Compaq Computer, HCPL will be able to start changing the system. Currently, the library has funding available to upgrade a portion of these computers in order for them to operate as CD-ROM units. Friends Groups will be asked to allocate funds to upgrade additional computers and funds will be requested in the FY92 budget to upgrade some computers as CD-ROM units. The remaining computers donated will be used to provide a variety of services for the library system. Many will be used as circulation system backup terminals, some will provide CD-ROM references resources available to the public, a portion will be made available for public use at the branches, some will be assigned to literacy rograms, and others will be assigned for ook acquisitions. The library is very grateful for the donation from Compaq and intends to pass the benefits on to the customers in the best ways possible. Pat Lippold Named Employee of the Quarter Pat Lippold, South Houston Branch Librarian, has been named HCPL’s second Employee of the Quarter during 1990. The nomination submitted for Pat began, "It is really amazing how much Pat Lippold manages to accomplish in a 900 square foot library with only one other staff member." The South Houston Branch Library only has two employees so Pat handles all the adult and children’s programming as well as the adult and juvenile selection lists and much more. The programming at the South Houston Branch Library is very much community minded. "Literacy (English as a Second Language) is a very big part of our adult programming," Pat said. Well, her literacy program produces more hours of tutoring monthly than any other branch. And, the intergenerational storyhour which is held weekly for mothers and children of Hispanic origin has been highly successful.
