Fairbanks Library celebrates 16 years at Gessner Road location The Fairbanks Library will celebrate its 16th birth¬ day on Oct. 5. To com¬ memorate this occasion the staff is inviting patrons to join them for refreshments on Oct. 7 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The library’s present building opened on Oct. 5, 1970, although the very first building that held the library opened in 1928. It was constructed on a splin¬ ter of land on Hempstead Highway just off U.S. Highway 290. It could ac¬ commodate only a half dozen people at one time and contained 100 books. The Fairbanks Library, now located in the Central Park, at the intersection of West Little York and North Gessner is 5,000 square feet, and contains about 34,000 books. In addition, the library offers records, videocassettes, magazines and books on cassettes for patron check out. Any resi¬ dent of Harris County can obtain a free library card and use the library.
