SEABROOK — Bay Area lit¬
erary and related talents were out
in force Monday night, nine of
them appearing at a Friends of the
Library meeting at the Evelyn
Meador Library to discuss their
works in print and in prospect.
Pulitzer Prize nominee Lionel
Garcia, a veterinarian by day and
a writer by night, nominated for
' his book, A Shroud in the Family
and another Pulitzer, said he
began writing when he was five
years old.
Garcia said he will have another
book out this summer and is also
working on a collection of short
stories that will be out in the 1 990s.
Lou Wright, a first-grade
teacher and mother of small
children, is the author of two
published romance novels under
the pen-name Alicia Knight.
“I chose Alicia because my
husband decided we would
weather Hurricane Alicia here,
and Knight rhymes with Wright,”
she explained. She said she has
taken an enforced hiatus from
writing while her children are
growing old enough to give her the
time it takes to pursue her “other”
career, an event to which she looks
forward.
Soldier-of-fortune Tom Town¬
send. who turned to writing when
he closed down his career as a
mercenary, said he started out as a
romance writer under the name
“Tammy Lee.”
“When the publishers discov¬
ered l was not a woman, that was
the end of that,” he said, “but that
book was a prequel to 12 others,”
Townsend has written 11 no¬
vels, one biography and one
non-fiction work, most of them in
the juvenile literature category.
“ Y ou have to turn out a lot of work
to make money,” he said.
Townsend said he moved to the
Bay Area 1 3 years ago to write and
lived on two boats — “both long
gone.” He lives now in San Leon
and tours schools with a one-man
show on the pirate Jean LaFitte,
“and my wife is my business
manager. 1 don’t know anything
about the business end of the
business.” he said.
Townsend has two new books
coming out: a juvenile history on
the Battle of Galveston “which the
South should never have won,” he
said, and Queen of the Wind, a
contemporary novel about racing
set in the Clear Lake area.
Anita Hickman, Michelle
Hegler, Peter Cuthbert and Phyllis
she has written two screenplays
“which Hollywood wants to
option.”
Bonnie and Noel Drew were
there, too. Illustrator and author,
respectively, of Fast Cash for Kids,
Drew said the book was inspired
by “money-earning Seabrook
kids... The book was written for
kids old enough to need money,”
he said, “but too young to get a
job."
Houston Post outdoors writer
Ken Grissom said he “can’t catch
fish and can’t shoot birds out of the
sky, and 1 figured I’d need
will have another mystery i _
fall.
Tom Weir, a chemical engineer
with a Ph.D., writes cookbooks
because he loves to cook. He said
he writes for fun and has been
doing it for 60 years.
“I started out cooking original
seafood recipes,” he said, “and
collected them and decided to
publish them for 100 friends as
Christmas gifts.”
Weir said he has written “a
couple” of church hymns, and
“for about 30 years,” poetry.
“And it’s been fun.”
put him through college with her
skills, which she says were devel¬
oped “B.C. — before computers.”
Graham said it is hard to be a
writer. “It’s a lonely life,” al¬
though she is an editor for Ebe-
nezer Press, a small religious press,
she said, and is the editor of Grass
Whistle, which she described as "a
spare-time book for children.”
Graham said the job of a book
designer, “not a jacket
illustrator,” is to give to the book
“a good look, a good feel” — and
she showed the differences in the
