After the first public organizational
meeting of the Seabrook “Friends of
the Library.’’ the group had not only
elected officers but were $10,000 richer
in their efforts to raise money in sup¬
port of the proposed new library.
Newly elected president, Jim
Hargrove, said numerous members of
the community and business communi¬
ty were on hand to hear the latest up¬
date on the progress of the library pro¬
posal through the commissioners
court. Hargrove said because of the
donation of land by the city to the pro¬
ject and the amount of money raised so
far, ground breaking on the new library
could be as early as the first of the year.
Also elected to the board of the
"Friends of the Library,” were Sherry
Pirtle, first vice president, Robbye
Waldron, treasurer and Geri McKallip,
secretary.
Representatives of the Seabrook
Association were on hand to present a
$5,000 check to the library fund for use
in the initial stocking of books.
Seabrook Mayor Bill Dickerson an¬
nounced the city’s pledge of $5,000 to
the fund and stated his hopes the
library would receive annual con¬
sideration in the city’s budget.
Hargrove said the library fund is now
in excess of $13,000. _
County Commissioner library
liaison, Molly Maness, announced the
name of the new library would be the
Evelyn Meador Library. Meador said
she was greatly appreciative of the
honor. "Seabrook has been in desperate
need for a library for a long time and
I’m very happy so much has been done
in such a short period of time. Jim
Hargrove deserves a lot of the credit
for the library project being where it
is today. He did most of the initial
legwork and the possibility of a library
being built in Seabrook wouldn’t be a
reality without Jim’s efforts,” said
Meador.
The new library is a joint project bet¬
ween the county, the City of Seabrook
and the residents of Seabrook. The Ci¬
ty donated five acres of Meador Park
to the county for the site. The land was
originally deeded to city as a gift from
Rex and Evelyn Meador.

The Seabrook Association
wasted no time in
distributing funds back into
the community that were
raised by the success of the
Seabrook Celebration and
other fund raisers held the
past year back into the com¬
munity. During the last
regualr meeting of the
Association, Rex Whaley,
president of the Association
announced to members the
executive board had decid¬
ed to donate $5,000 to both
the Ed White Memorial
Youth Center and to the
newly formed Friends of the
Library.
The Youth Center has
been receiving continuing
support from the Associa¬
tion over the years. Barbara
Payne, director of the youth
center, said the center’s

continued operations was
due in large part from the
generous support the '
Seabrook Association has
always given.
‘‘The Youth Center has
been able to provide many
of the services and pro¬
grams to the youth of
Seabrook, because of the
concern and support given
by community businesses
and individuals through the
Seabrook Association” said
Payne.
The selection of the
Friends of the Library as
another beneficiary was an
added financial boost to the
group’s efforts to work with
the County for the construc¬
tion of a new county library
on five acres of land donated
by 4he City to the library
project.

the Friends of the Library,

association for its support
amount of money raised by
the festivities during the
Seabrook Celebration

strides were being made on
the progress between the ci¬
ty and the county on the pro¬
posed library. “The way
things are going it is quite
possible ground breaking
and construction could
began as early as January
1986,” said Hargrove.
