New library to
be named for
Evelyn Meador
Groundbreaking may occur
early next year
SEABROOK — As a group of
about 50 residents from Seabrook, El
Lago, and Taylor Lake Village rose to
their feet in the Seabrook Interme¬
diate School cafeteria applauding,
the proposed library was given a
name — Evelyn Meador Library.
“Yes, I’m honored,” Evelyn
Meador said.
The Meador’s, Rex and Evelyn,
donated 21 acres of land, which is
located on Meyer Road across from
the Seabrook Intermediate School, to
the city in 1983. Rex Meador said
they gave the land to Seabrook for the
children. “We love children,” he
said.
“The land was donated for the
parks and general good will of the
community,” Jim Hargrove, presi¬
dent of the Friends of the Evelyn
Meador Library, said at the meeting
last week.
The land was specified to be used
for parks, playgrounds, and other
facilities that children could use.
Last Tuesday night was the first
organizational meeting of the
Friends of the Evelyn Meador Li¬
brary. The officials for the group were
named: president, Jim Hargrove;
vice president, Sherry Pirtle; secre¬
tary, Gerri McKallup; and treasurer,
Robbye Waldron.
The organization also adopted
bylaws. The Friends of the Evelyn
Meador Library is a group which
provides financial assistance for the
purchase of special equipment, fur¬
nishings, or books for the library
which would not otherwise be
available through the library budget.
The group is in charge of informing
the surrounding communities of the
library’s special services while en¬
couraging gifts, endowments, and
memorials. The organization also
sponsors cultural programs and ac¬
tivities.
“We’re going to make this a
community library and one we can
be proud of,” Hargrove said.
By the end of the meeting, the
Friends group collected about $19,
000 which will go toward the pur¬
chase of books. The Seabrook As-
sooation dor.2:ec S5.000. the City
Council budget sets aside $5,000 and
$9,000 has been collected from area
residents.
The library will be constructed,
maintained, and staffed by the
county. The initial 25,000 volumes
of books will also be the county’s
responsibility.
Molly Maness, aide to Harris
County Commissioner Jim Fonteno,
said anytime a city shows as much
enthusiasm as Seabrook has for
building a library, such as donating
land and organizing the friends
group, “it puts you one j ump ahead.”
Maness said the library proposal is
in the hands of the county for ap-
