COUNTY LIBRARY TO
BE ON 5TH FLOOR
OF COURT HOUSE
Northeast Section Will Be
Floored and Made
Suitable
At the regular meeting Monday of the
commissioners of Harris county and
County Judge Chester H. Bryan, it was
definitely decided to remodel the north¬
east section of the fifth floor of- the court
house for the home of the new county
library, with Miss Lucy T. Fuller as j
librarian. An inspection of t.he floor was
made and the decision was made that
flooring the room would make it suitable.
Howe & Wise, county engineers, will be
instructed to receive bids as , soon as
specifications are completed, it was
stated at the court house.
Fending the installing of her offices in .
the court house, Miss Fuller was found
at the city library, deeply immersed in
book catologs and wearing a stern look
of concentration, as she read and re- ;
read descriptions of Mark Twain’s works, ,
bound in vellum, •‘Robinson 'Cruesoe” in
buckram, and "Les Miserables” in two
volumes, delivered postpaid at some
strange figure. Here the latest addition
to the list of county officials suddenly
came to earth and plunged into the sub¬
ject nearest her heart. “Books for
everybody,” she stated, “is our aim. One
book per person for Harris county is
what we hope to achieve soon.” .
Books Lend Life.”
“And you see,” Miss Fuller said,
“books are fun.” Lots of fun. . They
lend life and color and romance to what
may sometimes lie a 'life df inonotony.
For a growing child, nothing can so help
or retard his education as books. They
must have ’em.”y
Judge Chester H. Bryan stated that
the library would be enlarged as fast as
the demand justified and that the county
will give it the support it attains in the
different communities. “The chief aim
of the library proper,” he said, “is to aid
the rural schools in their educational
work not only among the children, but in
their extension work with the older
people of the community in which the col¬
lections are to be located from time to
time.”
Serve As Central Plant.
It was stated that the county library
would serve as a central plant for the
various collections to be loaned out. to'
the rural communities. Jfiss Fuller also
said: “I hope to keep here a collection
of books suitable for the use of teachers
in the comity’s schools. My experience
in teaching school in Harris county will
be of immense help to me in procuring
these reference books and hand books
for teachers. I expect to have at least
3000 books here in a short time for in¬
stallation in the new quarters. These
will include a great many children’s
books, standard and popular fiction,
books on travel, history, science and lit¬
erature for reference by county officials
as well as the general public. In order
to gratify the popular demands of the
public, I must hear from them as to what
they want and need.
Wants Letters.
“I am anxious to have them write to
me stating their wants along this line.
Of course, we c^n estimate beforehand
a large number of books that are always
popular. Every boy will bashfully inquire
for 'Robinson Crusoe’ or ‘Treasure
Island.’ At the first school T asked for
suggestions, and one little tot piped lust¬
ily for ‘dear ole Muvver Goose.’ * All will
ask for ‘Ivanhoe’ sooner or later. For
the communities there will be additional
books on physiology and hygiene, house¬
keeping and like subjects. We will have
to have some fairy tales, also stories
dealing with the history of the grand old
State as well as American history.” j
