Bookmobile is proving popular

The Harris County Public Library on Wheels iiiirv The Bookmobile Part of the County’s Library System Which Serves the Small Towns in the County. There was no doubt about the tremendous need for the Book¬ mobile on the first day out. Stops were made at Meadowbrook, Golden Acres, Morgans Point, Shore Acres, Clear Lake and Genoa. The librarians found young people who sought “something with plenty of action” and older folks who came only to look but who remained to borrow. One case in point was that of two women who told the libra¬ rian they never read books. One spied a book on the care of chil¬ dren. The attention of the other was caught by a book on diet. Both took out cards and then, as an added gesture of interest, bor¬ rowed some fiction too. The librarians met with a splendid response from the resi¬ dents of the towns visited. When told that the Bookmobile was part of the county library sys¬ tem, one man said he had trav¬ eled and had seen many fine projects, but none better than the “library on wheels.” All bor¬ rowers were delighted with the prospect of a visit from the Bookmobile every two weeks. The body of the Bookmobile was designed and built by C. Jim Stewart & Stevenson and is mounted on a ton and a half General Motors truck chassis.
