Aldine Library reopens June 4
The Aldine Branch Li¬
brary, closed in August
after suffering extensive
damage in Hurricane
Alicia, will be re-opening
on June 4.
Kathy Ziegler, Aldine
librarian, mentions that a
new librarian has joined the
staff upon the departure of
long-time staff member.
Margaret Adamson. Her
replacement is Terry Ster¬
ling, a new Houston area
resident and graduate of
The City of Houston’s
Job Training Partnership
Division (JTPD) has opened
a service center on the
North Freeway for its 1984
Summer Youth Employ¬
ment and Training Program
(SYETP).
Although past emphasis
has been on summer job
placement and training,
SYETP is taking on the
unique facet this year of
placing youth, who have
completed high school, in
permanent entry level posi¬
tions. However, the pro¬
gram will still be involved
in summer job placement
and training.
Many city departments
are making an effort to
identify entry level employ¬
ment opportunities within
their divisions that could
offer job skills training and
a possible career to quali¬
fied individuals. Some posi¬
tions already have been
indentified.
The North Service Center
will serve as summer job
placement headquarters for
Houston teen-agers from
the library school at Univer¬
sity of Denver.
Mary Baird will be re¬
turning as children’s librar¬
ian, with many, many activ¬
ities planned for the chil¬
dren’s summer reading
program. She has been
visiting area schools during
May to talk about the
programs.
Delores Pena and Laveme
Shepherd, desk assistants,
and Drew Hutto and Sandy
Rodriguez, shelving assist-
economically disadvantag¬
ed families.
Persons between the ages
of 14 and 21 who qualify to
participate in the program
may apply at the centers for
jobs with local non-profit
organizations.
“The purpose of the pro¬
gram is to teach the partic¬
ipants the basic skills of
getting a job so they can
seek employment on their
own,” Acting Director Ron¬
ald Patterson said.
“Unless there are special
circumstances we would
not encourage our partic¬
ipants to return to the pro¬
gram the following sum¬
mer,” he added.
Youth who are placed
through the program will
work a 40-hour week at
minimum wage through the
summer. Salaries will be
paid through JTPD funds.

ants, are all anxious to be
back, making library serv¬
ice a reality for the Aldine
area again.
The library, located at
11331 Airline Drive, will
have new hours upon re¬
opening: Monday, 1 to 9
p.m.; Tuesday and
Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6
p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to
9 p.m.; Friday, 1 to 6 p.m.;
and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5
p.m.
The telephone number
remains the same: 445-
5560.
“We appreciate our
patrons’ continuing interest
in the library’s reopening,
and want everyone to know
how anxious we, the staff,
are to get back into the
community," Ziegler said.
Plans for the grand re¬
opening include a Friends
of the Library membership
drive, an art exhibit by the
Stovall Junior High Art
Department, a puppet shov*
and juggling demonstration
for children, interior dec¬
oration class for adults, and
weekly storytime and film
programs. More informa¬
tion will be forthcoming as
the date approaches.
