Department. I think they
could give us a better idea
as to what is actually going
on,” he said. Rochelle urg¬
es crime victims to report it
to the Civic Club President,
to facilitate the compilation
of statistics.
An attempt to get data on
the crime rate in the civic
club, before and after the
program was initiated, was
fruitless. There was no
answer to repeated calls to
the Harris County Sheriffs
Community Service office.
But civic club optimism is
high. A sign dedication was
held June 22 at the Deer-
trail entrance to Hidden
Valley.
The signs, warning po¬
tential lawbreakers of the
enforcement of “Block
Watching,” are posted at
each entrance to the tract.
The organization under
Rochelle consists of eight
area coordinators, and a
block captain for each 40
houses. Under the block
captains are six helpers,
according to need.
The following^procedure
is followed. If a watcher or
neighbor suspects some¬
thing is not right in some¬
one’s home, such as an
unfamiliar station wagon or
truck parked in the drive¬
way, the first step is to call
the house. If the owner
does not answer or an
unfamiliar voice does, call
the sheriffs department.
"Burglars in the process
of entering some of the
homes have been caught
since the program start¬
ed,” Ritchie said. “A ju¬
venile was involved in one
and several others

also said the people in the
subdivision have been "tre¬
mendous in volunteering
their efforts.”
"The program is more
and more successful as
people become more famil¬
iar with it. We cannot
become an island by our¬
selves,” Ritchie noted.
In spite of the stepped-
up efforts to combat crime
some residents are being
burglarized.
Mrs. Rose Gunji notified
the workers she would be
away for a three day week¬
end. She was gone only a
day when a neighbor called
to lell her that her home
had been burglarized. The
neighbor checked her
house when she saw the
Gunji garage door was
open.
Mrs. Gunji cut her holi¬
day short and returned to
find three color T.V.'s, a
watch, pearl necklace and
pearl pin, photographic
equipment including two
movie cameras, two pro¬
jectors and two still camer¬
as gone. Also an electric
lawn edger, a microwave
oven, two bicycles, a Wil¬
liam Rogers Stainless Steel
set and a Tea and Coffee
Service, along with a new
sofa table and stereo and a
piggy bank containing $15.
Thirty-two items were
missing.
The burglars had
brought chocolate milk with
them and sat down to eat.
They messed up the kitch-
. en, spilling the chocolate
milk, leaving broken pieces
from the microwave oven
which they dropped. They
also broke a huge flower
pot located next to the T.V.
AH mattresses had been
turned upside down and the
front door was /damaged
when it had been pried
open.
Tire marks and mud left
in the garage and other
clues led to their capture
and eleven items were re¬
covered, most of them in
very bad condition..
